ICT Research: European Commission and Brazil devote €10 million to cooperation in ICT research & development. The European Commission and the Brazilian Government have stepped up their cooperation on research and development in information and communication technologies (ICTs). A €10 million coordinated call for proposals will allow researchers and industries in the EU and Brazil to exchange their R&D strengths in key technological areas such as Future Internet experimental facilities and security, microelectronics and micro-systems, networked monitoring and control, and e-Infrastructures. The EU and Brazil are each contributing €5 million, which will be used to fund five pairs of interlinked projects. http://europa.eu/rapid/pressReleasesAction.do?reference=IP/10/1200&format=HTML&aged=0&language=EN&guiLanguage=en
Digital Agenda: European Commission announces €780 million boost for strategic ICT research. The European Commission has today announced one of the biggest calls ever for information and communications technology (ICT) research proposals under the EU’s research framework programmes. The announcement was made at Europe’s largest event for ICT research and innovation, ICT 2010-Digitally Driven. It will result in project funding of € 780 million in 2011. This funding will advance research on the future internet, robotics, smart and embedded systems, photonics, ICT for energy efficiency, health and well-being in an ageing society, and more. Under the Digital Agenda for Europe, the Commission has committed to maintaining the pace of a 20% yearly increase of the annual ICT R&D budget at least until 2013 http://europa.eu/rapid/pressReleasesAction.do?reference=IP/10/1184&format=HTML&aged=0&language=EN&guiLanguage=en
Digital Agenda: Major ICT companies join European Commission initiative to reduce electricity consumption. Information & communication technology (ICT) equipment and services consume over 8% of electrical power in the EU and produce about 4% of its CO2 emissions. These figures could double by 2020. The European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC) manages voluntary codes of conduct for ICT companies to reverse this trend. Today in Brussels at the “ICT 2010-Digitally Driven” event, 16 more ICT firms have agreed to reduce the electricity consumption of their broadband equipment and data centres. http://europa.eu/rapid/pressReleasesAction.do?reference=IP/10/1185&format=HTML&aged=0&language=EN&guiLanguage=en

Commission supports digitisation of European cinemas. The European Commission announced a new strategy today aimed at helping European cinemas to go digital and to encourage more of them to screen European-made films, thus ensuring a wider choice for cinema-goers. The cost of digital equipment is prohibitive for many small cinemas and the Commission’s strategy sets out options for financial support, including state-aid and backing from the European Regional Development Fund and EU MEDIA programme, which supports the film industry. One of the opportunities created by the move to digital is to increase the feasibility of converting films made in the first years of cinema to preserve them for future generations. http://europa.eu/rapid/pressReleasesAction.do?reference=IP/10/1168&format=HTML&aged=0&language=EN&guiLanguage=en

NEWS
Mapping gender and the Sixth and Seventh Framework Programmes. There is widespread agreement that gender relations are central to most social, economic and political experiences. Gender research increasingly informs policy initiatives at the national, European and international levels. A current debate in this field is whether this research should increasingly focus on gender-specific work or rather aim to mainstream issues in other areas of scholarship. The European Commission’s opinion is that both approaches can and should be pursued. To support this conclusion, a report, ‘Gender research in the Sixth Framework Programme and the first period of the Seventh Framework Programme’, has been published to show that such an approach can be successfully implemented. The report is divided into two halves: gender-focused projects, and projects with a substantial gender dimension. http://cordis.europa.eu/search/index.cfm?fuseaction=news.document&N_RCN=32588
Lights, camera, action… EU helps cinemas go digital. Bridging the gap between culture and science is one of the EU’s top priorities. The European Commission is supporting this effort by green-lighting a new strategy that will help digitise European cinemas and promote the screening of European-made films. It’s a win-win situation for everyone: cinema aficionados will have access to more films and small cinemas can embrace state-of-the-art technology without burning huge holes in their pockets. http://cordis.europa.eu/search/index.cfm?fuseaction=news.document&N_RCN=32578
