The main focus of the event will be ‘Software in the age of the cloud’.  Cloud computing refers to the provision of computational resources on demand via a computer network. Commission selects six future and emerging technologies (FET) projects to compete for research funding. Six research projects selected to compete for two top spots in the area of research into future and emerging technologies (FET) have been announced today by the European Commission at the FET11 conference and exhibition in Budapest. The six contenders will receive around €1.5 million each to refine their proposal for one year, after which only two will be selected. The aim of these flagship initiatives will be to deliver major breakthroughs in information and communication technologies (ICT), with the potential to provide solutions to some of society’s biggest challenges. Le idee globali girano veloci. Adesso che la Cina è il quarto Paese al mondo per brevetti (e pretende che siano rispettati), è ora di mettere il sistema mondiale delle «patent» al passo con il ritmo accelerato della ricerca scientifica e tecnologica.
Lo scorso 14 aprile la World lnternational Property Organization (Wipo) ha registrato il duemilionesimo brevetto internazionale. Ci sono voluti 27 anni perché venisse registrato il primo milione di brevetti e solo 6 anni per arrivare a quota due milioni. L’accelerazione, a partire da quando la Wipo ha varato il trattato per la cooperazione sui brevetti (Patent cooperation Treaty, o Pct) nel 1978, è stata rapida. E il Pct, che peraltro ha efficacia in 1.42 Paesi, è solo l’ultimo anello di una catena molto più lunga: i brevetti vengono registrati in ambiti diversi su scala nazionale sia dalle grandi aziende che da quelle più piccole o dai singoli. E gli ambiti di registrazione, le lingue con le quali i brevetti vengono scritti, la loro trasportabilità al di fuori dei confini nazionali e la loro interpretazione costituiscono una delle maggiori rigidità sia in termini di costi che di tempi per l’economia della conoscenza. http://www.filas.it/News.aspx?IDNews=489

Computational social choice (CSI) is an interdisciplinary field of study which combines computer science, artificial intelligence, logic, political science and economic theory, among others. The field is concerned with the application of techniques developed in computer science, such as complexity analysis or algorithm design, to the study of social choice mechanisms, such as voting procedures or fair division algorithms. Strategy Report on Research Infrastructures.
The European Strategy Forum for Research Infrastructures (ESFRI) has published the „Strategy Report on Research Infrastructures – Roadmap 2010” in March 2011. The first part of the document contains the work programme of ESFRI for the coming years and the second part an updated roadmap for 48 European research infrastructures (for the next 10 – 20 years).
